Choosing the Right Breeder

Sharing is caring!

How exciting you’ve decided to add a fur baby to your family. But WAIT before you just go pick up that puppy you found online do your homework first to ensure your choosing the right breeder.

This step is SO important. Honestly, we don’t even like the name
“breeder” it just sounds icky and not friendly. We much prefer “raising”, especially in our home because that’s exactly what we do.

First impression matters

What is your very FIRST impression in speaking to the breeder or seeing their website? Is it a pit? Or a wow? That feeling should be your deciding factor on what you do next.

A good breeder will answer all questions you have from the very beginning and even after you take your puppy home. You should get a warm welcoming feeling from the breeder from the first time you speak on the phone or even in e-mail or text. They will welcome you into their home via in person or video and be able to tell you about each one of the dogs they own from age, personalities, health background and how many litters they have had. The dogs should look healthy, be well mannered and not afraid of their humans.

Reputation and reliability

Most reliable breeders earn their reputation by providing good quality pups to good homes which results in great reviews and word-of-mouth references. Do your research, ask around, check reviews. Keeping an open mind of course, as not everyone will like the same type of people or place. 😃

Does the breeder have social media accounts? A website? Looking at social media accounts and or a website can give you a good first impression to the effort a breeder puts into their business. Do they show pictures? videos? Their faces? Is it updated?

Start by talking to the breeder. Are they willing to answer questions? Allow a home visit to pick your puppy? video calls beforehand? Do they have good reviews? Have you seen pictures of previous litters? Does the breeder show all their dogs? Can they tell you about their dogs’ personalities?

Dog Registration

Let’s talk American Kennel Club (AKC). Sadly society tells you a piece of paper from the AKC registering your dog is what tells you the breeder is legit. That is NOT true, it’s quite the opposite. It’s very easy for a breeder to submit a piece of paper saying X is the Dam and Z is the Sire, they don’t ask for proof, pictures, etc. So, ask yourself what that piece of paper really means. Most times it means breeders wanting more money or feel its proof of a good breeder and or good litter. Don’t get us wrong this can be a great addition to a GREAT breeder, but don’t let someone tell you that this piece of paper makes them better. Yes, our dogs are registered, but we made sure, and always will we do tons of research into where our dogs are coming from.

We are far from perfect and honestly not everyone will like how we do things. But what we can tell you is our home is open, our honesty is always there, and our dogs are very loved and cared for. We try to learn from our mistakes and grow in knowledge with every breeding and litter.
