The First few days!!
The first few days home with your puppy is rather quiet for them as they are getting acquainted with their new space and family. It’s best not to have company or extra people for the first few days as it is overwhelming to puppy. An overwhelmed puppy can be a naughty puppy, sick puppy or even worse a traumatized puppy.
After about a week start slowly socializing your puppy but in small increments. Never push a puppy to do things they look uncomfortable doing. Watch for signs of being nervous, tail tucked between legs, body posture, crouching to the ground and moving backwards to name a few. Let your puppy interact at their own pace. never force them to do anything they don’t want to do. let them direct you to what they are comfortable with.
They need to be loved, to be played with and exercised. They need lots of attention. this makes them feel safe, did you know a puppy NEEDS as much human companionship as possible until 12 weeks of life? they thrive off it. A bored puppy is a naughty puppy.
The First night!
The first night or two will can be rough, please plan on a sleepless few nights. Keeping your puppy in the same space they will sleep in each night helps them. It’s okay for you puppy to cry for a few short minutes but if 5 minutes have passed, consoling your puppy for a few minutes to let them know you are there, and they are safe.
Things to help you new puppy!!
If you purchased the heartbeat dog, make sure they have it, if not make sure they have a blanket and or stuffy for comfort. Puppies are used to having their siblings to help comfort them. now they are away from thier littermates everything is all new for them, change is scary. Patience is key. Frustration will not help. it will get better I promise. It just takes a few days for them to adjust to their new sleeping space.
Feeding!
Make sure you don’t forget to feed your puppy. staying on a good breakfast, lunch and dinner schedule will be crucial in successful potty training, they usually will poop within 20 min after each meal until they get older. Take them out immediately following each meal, each time they wake up, give them time to potty, never rush them.
If your puppy is expressing naughty behaviors such as biting, jumping, chewing on unwanted things, re direct them with a toy, or chew bone, take them outside or for a walk. don’t scold the puppy. You will beed to teach them wrong and right. Ignoring unwanted behavior is the best way to have it stop.
words like “no thank you” and “Ah Ah”. We have used these words with them to redirect and help with unwanted behavior. they are very familiar with them. Be consistent in everything you do; your puppy will recognize that and learn very fast.
Behaviors your puppy sees!!
Reminder if you display angry behaviors, it scares your puppy and hurts their development. if you display calm behavior your puppy learns that. Your puppy will feed off all behaviors its sees and hears. If your home is calm, has direction your puppy will behave in that way. if your home is loud and chaotic your puppy will feed off that. So, choose how you want to raise your puppy.
children need to be watched with puppies, it takes seconds for a puppy or child to be injured unintentionally. It takes seconds for a puppy to become overwhelmed and traumatized for life or for a puppy to be dropped. Children should always be supervised while a puppy is around. If your away your puppy should be with you, not left in a room unsupervised with children.
CONSISTENCY IS KEY IN RAISING A WELL BEHAVED PUPPY!
