Time to take your puppy home, now what?

Here’s all the things you should know about your puppy and what to expect bringing him or her home.

Puppies will be dewormed a few days before going home. This will cause loose stools for 3-4 days which is very common. You can give your puppy Pepto or a spoonful of pumpkin to help if you choose.

Meal Time

Your puppy has been eating TLC Pet food (puppy Formula)food. TLC Pet food is sold only online and shipped right door for FREE. Here is a custom link here.We strongly recommended that you stick to the same food as this is a great quality food. We like this kibble as it has great ingredients for kibble. Our dogs are also fed fruits, veggies, raw eggs, and fresh food each day. Ex: breakfast: Kibble, frozen blueberries. Lunch: Kibble, raw egg, veggies. Dinner: Kibble and fresh food (bought or made see blog post Feeding raw. This sounds like a lot, but I assure you once you get into a good routine, it’s second nature.

Your puppy NEEDS 3 meals a day- Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner for LIFE. I know google research says once a puppy reaches 6 months they can have 2 meals. However we 100% disagree with this. dogs should have 3 meals a day. The kibble should be soaked in warm water for 5-10 minutes each meal. This gives it moisture so they aren’t eating dry food all day long. think about it this way, do you want to eat dry crackers every day all day? NO!)

Your puppy has been potty training for the last 4 weeks, they are doing GREAT! Be consistent, set a 45-minute timer and reward each time they potty outside. this will set you up for successful potty trips outside instead of inside. Your puppy WILL have accidents, do NOT scold your puppy, instead re direct outside and reward if they potty again outside.

Crate Training

Crate training can be great but it is important that your puppy should not becrated 5 plus hours a day as it is not healthy for them. Find an alternative like a puppy pen, puppy gate to keep puppy in one area of your home, like bathroom, kitchen or laundry room, a dog walker, family member etc… A crate should NEVER be used as punishment for naughty behavior or potty accidents.

A crate should be a safe place for your puppy to nap, have a break for you and or the puppy or when your gone for short periods of time, not all puppies do well in a crate, its important if they are anxious about their crate to help them feel safe rather then be angry with them or just leave them to suffer, anxiety is real for dogs and they should  Try this amazing heartbeat dog toy.Their are so many options out there such as calming drops or chews. give them to your puppy about 15 min before entering crate OR if crate is used daily given each AM with their breakfast.

Car rides

Car rides. Your puppy will love traveling with you. It’s important to make sure you start this from day one if you plan to have your puppy go places with you whether it be to the store or a longer trip. If your puppy isn’t use to the car, they may not enjoy it and be anxious. If your puppy gets car sick, there are medications that will help with it.

Leash Training

Leash training is very important. It will take several times of being put on a leash before they are comfortable enough to walk however We recommended to try it inside, or in your yard before expecting your puppy to just walk on a leash for a walk. DO NOT get frustrated with them it will come with time. We promise!

Supervision

Make sure your puppy is supervised around children younger than 13. Yes, we trust our children, but things can happen quickly and by mere accident. It’s very important to teach your children safety around the puppy, how to hold the puppy, not to put puppy on furniture they can’t jump off, not to chase the puppy.  Remember if your children or you are hyper and loud the puppy will react to that and behave that way if you are calm and playful your puppy will be as well. Your Puppy will feed off how your home is run.  Please never scold a puppy for being naughty, give them an alternative instead, a toy, take them outside etc…

Your puppy should never be left outside tied to a run or leash, it’s DANGEROUS. If you have a puppy pen or fenced in yard, your puppy can be left for BUT only a few minutes at a time, puppies can get into mischief quickly, and sadly puppies can be stolen. Your puppy should be exercised daily, play ball, a walk, run around, chase bubbles, small hike (until older, then can be bigger), etc..

A bored puppy is a naughty puppy. It’s very important your puppy has enough stimulation and naps each day to avoid naughty puppy behavior. Having the right puppy toys is very important, see our (link tree) for some great options. Toys should be always accessible to your puppy, a small toy bin is a great option, see our (link tree).

Training

If you don’t want your puppy on furniture, then make sure you start that from day one. They will become easily confused if you allow them on the furniture one day and not the next. We encourage you to let your puppy on furniture, for us its important they are fully a part of your family in every way.

At some point and definitely more than once your puppy will do things you do not approve of, make sure to correct it immediately and be consistent but do not punish them.

We are here to help with anything. Please do not hesitate to contact us at any time. Whether its days, weeks or years later. We want to always make sure you and your puppy are living the best life possible.

It’s the exciting time to bring your puppy home
